Congaree National Park Boardwalks, Congaree National Park, SC
JGT is on a Team of Consultants for an Indefinite Delivery Contract with the National Park Service in the Southeast. This team recently completed the design for the Phase 1 boardwalk replacement at the Park. JGT was responsible for the structural design and layout of the new boardwalks. Phase 1 included the replacement of approximately 1000 linear feet of timber boardwalk. The boardwalk is located in a sensitive wilderness area that is very restrictive on materials and construction techniques. The boardwalks were slightly enlarged to accommodate larger crowds and ADA access. The boardwalks were also design to allow for sloped areas that are all ADA accessible. The boardwalk foundation incorporated the use of helical piers to support the structure in the swampy area and to promote constructability of the structure. The Consultant Team, which includes JGT, has also been selected to complete the design-build preliminary design and specification package for Phase 2 of the boardwalk replacement. Phase 2 includes the replacement of approximately 6,000 linear feet of timber boardwalk. Phase 2 will involve adjusting the boardwalk elevations to minimize flooding and create ADA viewing areas. The Phase 2 boardwalks will all be ADA compliant.
