Segmental Block Causeway

The Reserve Harbor Marina is a sister project to The Reserve, a Greg Norman-designed golf course and exclusive development at Litchfield in Georgetown County, South Carolina. The project included construction of a high end wetslip marina with a basin excavated from uplands on Willbrook Island. Access was achieved through a historical rice field canal, which presented a unique design challenge. Ultimately, a steel sheet pile, cantilevered bulkhead was employed to stabilize one side of the channel. A dike featuring impressive cypress trees was left its natural state on the opposite side of the entrance channel. A water quality model, coordinated with marina operational guidelines, assured environmental and cultural responsibility on a historic site. The challenging project included accommodations for a public boat ramp accessed through a private club marina. Alternative designs for various building and structural materials were necessary to address project needs and market conditions. The sensitive site required preservation of 200-year old oaks and a colonial cemetery. The significant topography, unusual for the area, required a sophisticated combination of terracing and timber sheet pile bulkhead to delineate the marina basin. Access to Willbrook Island was achieved via land by improvements to an existing causeway. The new causeway was constructed from segmental masonry units and accommodates all the utilities serving the Island. The marina contains 60 wet slips, a 240-slip drystack, a public boat ramp with 25 trailer spaces, fuel facilities, a private clubhouse and ancillary parking facilities.  www.reserveharbormarina.com
