Little Oak Island Causeway Bulkhead Project

Little Oak Island is a private residential community located in the Town of Folly Beach in Charleston County, South Carolina.  The only path of ingress and egress from the island is via an approximately 2,300 foot long causeway.  The causeway, which is located adjacent to the marshes of the Folly River,  had been experiencing erosion and sliding soil failures that were endangering the stability of the causeway.

In 2013 JGT was engaged by the property Owners Association to conduct an engineering study of the causeway and develop solutions and cost estimates for them.  The solution that was chosen by the POA was the construction of a timber bulkhead with rip rap toe protection along the length of the causeway.  Specifically, the project consists of construction of approximately 2,557 linear feet of new bulkhead and rip rap (9,375 SF, 951 cubic yards) along the existing causeway and approximately 2,052 square feet (191 cubic yards) of rip rap toe protection will be added along the existing timber bulkhead section.

The Regulatory Permitting of the project presented several challenges in itself.  The permits were secured from SCDHEC-OCRM and the Corps of Engineers in late 2014 and early 2015.  The project was bid to contractors and construction began in October 2015.
