The Public Works Department of Berkley County, SC was considering an upgrade of an existing obsolete single lane facility on Durham Creek at the Cypress Gardens road. Both recreational and fishing boaters use the facility as access to the freshwater areas of the upper Cooper River. Damage to boats during launching had occurred and complaints about the facility were frequent. Jon Guerry Taylor & Associates was commissioned to study the facility and develop a phased improvement plan that would allow the facility to stay in operation while construction of a new facility was underway.

The first phase included demolition of a portion of the facility and construction of a double launching ramp, a service dock that allows fishing and water access and a “ground out” dock for boat launching uses. Lighting and erosion control as well as parking improvements were included. A second phase will be constructed when funds are available.
