The existing waterfront passive park is the home for special events such
as the "Taste of Charleston", the Fourth of July Celebration,
and rowing shell races. The river’s edge has always been used by local
fishermen who didn't have access to motor boats. Recognizing this
immediate need, the Charleston Parks Department wanted to design a fishing
pier that would allow access to the water for the non boating public,
provide a teaching location for school children, and also have floating
dock facilities for police and emergency boat berthing. JGT designed a pier that includes a barrier free walkway for
handicapped visitors to the existing parking area, a 300' long, 8' wide
pier for crabbing and fishing, a roofed octagonal gazebo, a fishing deck,
and a concrete floating dock. The pier has low level lighting that, while
providing lighting for patrons, does not interfere with adjacent uses. The
handrails feature special adaption for fishermen in wheelchairs, or seated
elderly patrons. JGT assisted in securing a $50,000 grant from South
Carolina Department Department of Natural Resources for the construction
of this pier.
Brittlebank Park’s use by local and tourist patrons has exceeded the
Parks Department’s projections. The pier has served as a catalyst for
Brittlebank Park’s revitalization, expanding the park’s use and
providing a waterfront experience not previously available in Charleston.
