Patriots Point Navel and Maritime Master
Development Consensus Plan
|
|
Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is a
400 acre harborfront recreational area and home of the historic Air Craft
Carrier USS Yorktown. The original plan completed in the early seventies
was outdated and contained planning elements that were no long feasible.
Recent construction projects had placed a financial strain on the project
and a complete reanalysis of development options was needed.
JGT was responsible for site
investigation, site planning, programming, engineering feasibility studies
and generation of a new Master Plan. Public meetings and planning sessions
were held to garner the public’s response to new plan elements. The new
plan recognizes the unique aspects and development opportunities of this
project while still integrating the ongoing growth of the Naval and
Maritime Museum. The new plan was also the first to place the waterfront
into the public domain by providing a perimeter walkway, fishing pier,
amphitheater and greenway along the Charleston Harbor.
Patriots Point is South Carolina’s most
famous and most visited tourist attraction. The Naval and Maritime Museum
with the USS Yorktown, USS Clamagore, and USS Laffey as its center pieces
is now the heart of a new planned commercial, retail and recreational
development area which will serve a multiple of unique waterfront
activities. This new Master Plan has become the accepted and endorsed
version of how Patriots Point will be developed over the next 15 years.
