Working as a subconsultant to
Hoffman Lester Associates, Inc., JGT was responsible for the permitting
and design of the waterfront facilities for this project. Hendricks Park
was to receive a total refurbishment after it had fallen into disuse and
disrepair. The City of North Charleston required an approach to develop
the site as a passive park with focus points onto Filbin Creek.
That focus specifically
was on two wooden fishing and observation piers into Filbin Creek. We also
designed an erosion control solution to the creek edge. The creek’s
current had eroded the bank to such an extent that large trees had fallen
into the creek. The solution consisted of reshaping the critical line,
filling some areas, and adding rip rap to control the bank erosion. As a
design element very large stones were added to break up the riprap and act
as sitting stones along a creek-front walkway.
