The prestigious Family Circle Cup
Tennis Tournament moved from its long-time home on Hilton Head Island to
the brand new, state of the art Tennis Centre on Daniel Island in 2001.
Recognizing a need for access by water, as well as the opportunity to
create a public waterfront promenade, the City of Charleston and Daniel
Island set aside a linear parcel of land on the east side of Daniel Island
on the banks of the Wando
River.
JGT
worked closely with the other members of the design team, Daniel Island,
and the City of Charleston Parks Department during the planning stages of
the docking facility and cart bridges. JGT performed engineering design
and value engineering services for the 200' fixed pier, floating dock,
mooring dolphins, and 500 linear feet of cart bridges.
The
docking facility will be used to bring VIPs and other guests from
peninsular Charleston up the Wando River to the tennis tournament and
other events. The bridges provide pedestrian and golf cart access from the
docking facility to the Tennis Centre along the waterfront promenade.
Governors Park, including the docking and bridges, is open year round the
public.
