The
Charleston Maritime Center is a public waterfront project developed to
catalyze the revitalization of the local fishing industry and provide a
location for a special maritime events facility on the Cooper River.
Special maritime events in downtown Charleston include visits by tall
ships, educational events, boat shows, and fishing tournaments.
The project was conducted in conjunction with Sasaki Associates and
included permitting for initial and maintenance dredging, and for the
marina facility. Prior to dredging, comprehensive contaminated sediment
testing programs were also provided. Because of the proximity of this site
to adjacent potential hazardous locations, this project received close
scrutiny for contaminants by state and federal agencies. Dredge disposal
alternatives included ocean disposal, disposal at Corps’ confined
disposal facilities, and evaluation of the CDF on Drum Island. Ultimately,
a new CDF designed specifically to accept contaminated sediments was
constructed on nearby Daniel Island. Currently, contaminated material
treatment alternatives include bioremediation, and use of a sand cap over
exposed polluted sediments. JGT provided both environmental permitting
services and environmental monitoring activities during construction
through South Carolina DHEC-OCRM and Charleston District Corps of
Engineers for this project. www.ci.charleston.sc.us/maritime.html
