BOC Challenge Race Home Port Permitting
| The
temporary marina and home port for the start and finish of the 1995 BOC
Challenge Around-the-World Race was built in the Charleston Harbor. The
prestigious BOC (British Oxygen Corporation) Race features contestants
from around the world, and the race is an international sporting event of
considerable stature for the City of Charleston. The BOC Race brings
important corporate representatives to the Charleston area and focuses
international attention on the City of Charleston.
Using the existing State Ports Authority’s
passenger terminal as a base of operations, JGT developed a design to
house approximately forty sailboats ranging from 40' to 60' in length.
Support facilities included electrical, water, and security. The project
was permitted through DHEC-OCRM and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as
well as coordinated through the U.S. Coast Guard and the Charleston Harbor
Pilots Association. The project needed to be active for approximately
three months and then quickly dismantled, leaving no remaining traces of
the temporary facility.
The project included a "first time
ever" permit to build within the secondary navigation channel of the
State Ports Authority in Charleston Harbor.
